Coronation Garden

Coronation Gardens sessions take place on the 1st and 3rd Sundays 2-3pm weather permitting

The Coronation Garden is a tiny public garden at the junction of Waverley Crescent and Heavitree Close, provided by Woolwich Borough Council in 1953 to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and for the benefit of the residents of the "old peoples' dwellings" in Heavitree Close.

Although it isn't strictly part of Plumstead Common, Plumstead Common Environment Group (now FOPC) agreed to take an interest in it at the request of a local Councillor who lived near it and was horrified at the amount of fly-tipping that took place there.

The idea was that PCEG members living nearby could keep an eye on it and report fly-tipping, but the idea took off: since that decision in 2012, volunteers have worked with RBG, and the garden has improved a lot, as local people tell us. Parks staff keep the grass cut and do the major planting work; volunteers regularly pick up litter, sweep leaves, trim the shrubs, weed the paths and beds, and try new planting ideas such as spring bulbs.

The provision of a bench (by Plumstead Common Environment Group) and a litter bin (by RBG) have made the garden more user-friendly. With local residents' support, there has been no fly tipping for some time.
